The Power of RESET: How Obstacles Can Make You Stronger
Last week, I scorched dinner beyond saving, watched my dream job slip through my fingers, and faced an honest, uncomfortable talk with a friend. It could’ve been the perfect recipe for a meltdown. In moments like these, it would be easy to spiral into the “Why me?” mode. But as I’ve learned from Ryan Holiday’s The Obstacle Is the Way, the challenges we dread are often not setbacks at all—they’re the very things that help us grow.
Stoicism is an old way of thinking that teaches us to focus on what we can control—our thoughts and actions—and not worry so much about things we can’t change. It is accepting the world as it is, not how we want it to be.
Ryan Holiday’s book, The Obstacle Is the Way, is based on this idea and shows us the obstacle isn’t blocking your path—it is the path. And once you see it that way, you’ll approach life’s roadblocks differently—whether it’s a work crisis, a parenting challenge, or a personal setback.
Here’s How to Take those Obstacles and Turn Them into your Stepping Stones
1. Change Your Lens: See Opportunities, Not Obstacles
Life throws curveballs—a traffic jam when you’re already late, an unexpected bill, or a tough conversation you’d rather avoid. Stoicism teaches that it’s not the event itself, but our perception of it, that determines how we handle it.
Try this: The next time you feel stuck in a long grocery store line, instead of fuming, take a deep breath and notice your surroundings. Remember, you don’t have control over other people or circumstances—only over yourself, your thoughts, your actions, and how you choose to see the situation. Maybe this moment is a chance to slow down, catch your breath, or even connect with the person in front of you.

2. Control What You Can—Release What You Can’t
Here’s the truth: you can’t control your teenager’s mood swings, your boss’s last-minute requests, what other people think of you or the weather. But you can control how you think, feel, and respond.
Try this: Imagine you’ve got two big buckets in front of you. One is labeled “In My Control” and the other is “Out of My Control.” Start sorting your thoughts, worries, and frustrations into the right bucket
If your co-worker’s mood, your child’s attitude, or the long wait at the doctor lands in the Out of My Control bucket, stop pouring your time and energy into it. Every ounce of energy you spend stressing over those things is energy you’re taking away from the things you can actually influence—like your own attitude, actions, and choices.
Instead, shrink your focus to the job or task right in front of you. Maybe it’s taking a quick walk, journaling for five minutes, or calming yourself before a tough conversation. The smaller your horizon, the sharper your focus—and the better you get at handling whatever life throws at you.
3. Take Small, Purposeful Action
A mindset shift is powerful, but action is where the real magic happens. Your brain likes clarity and small wins—it can get overwhelmed and shut down when a task feels too big. By breaking challenges into small, manageable steps, you give your brain a clear target and a sense of progress, which boosts motivation and keeps you moving forward.
Example: If your home feels cluttered and overwhelming, don’t aim to organize the whole house in one day. Start with a single drawer. Small wins build momentum.
4. Strengthen Your Inner Resilience
Resilience is like a muscle—the more you use it, the stronger it gets. It’s what helps you bounce back after setbacks, face challenges head-on, and even push past fear to take a chance. You’ll never know what you’re capable of if you don’t put yourself out there. Simple tools like affirmations can be powerful reminders of your inner strength.
Say this: “I am strong. I am capable. I am resilient. I will get through this.” Speak it daily, especially when self-doubt or fear tries to hold you back. Every time you push through and get back up, you’re teaching yourself how to handle the next challenge with more strength and confidence

5. Create Moments of Stillness
In the whirlwind of motherhood, work, and life, stillness might feel impossible—but it’s exactly what helps you think clearly and make better decisions.
Try this: Take 5 minutes before bed to read, pray, journal, or simply sit in silence without your phone. These small moments of stillness, like those encouraged in The Miracle Morning routine, help clear your mind, reduce stress, and prepare you for a calmer, more focused day ahead.
6. Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection
Many women hold themselves to incredibly high standards, expecting to manage every part of life flawlessly. But perfection is a moving target—it’s impossible to reach and exhausting to chase. Instead of aiming for perfection, focus on celebrating the small wins that show you’re growing and moving forward.
Example: You handled a tough conversation without losing your cool? That’s a win. You went for a walk even though you were tired? Another win. Or maybe you made a healthy meal for your family despite a busy day, reminding yourself that progress matters more than perfection. Recognizing these moments helps build confidence and motivation, keeping you resilient through life’s ups and downs.
How This Fits with The TRISH Method
In my own coaching, I use The TRISH Method—a simple but powerful framework to help women reset their lives and navigate challenges with confidence.

T – TAP into Your VISION
Like the Stoics, start by focusing on the big picture—your why. When you have a clear vision for who you want to be and what kind of life you want to live, obstacles become detours, not dead ends.
Example: If your vision is to create more peace in your home, that argument with your teen about screen time becomes an opportunity to model calm communication instead of creating tension. Write down your vision and place it somewhere you’ll see every day—on your bathroom mirror, fridge, or phone lock screen
R – REFRAME Your MINDSET
Stoicism teaches us that we can choose how to interpret challenges. Reframing turns “Why is this happening to me?” into “What is this teaching me?”
Example: You miss a work deadline because your child was sick. Instead of beating yourself up, you recognize that this moment reinforces your priorities and teaches you flexibility. Journal one reframe a day for a week—you’ll be amazed at how your brain starts to see solutions instead of problems.
I – IMPROVE Your SURROUNDINGS
Your environment influences your mood, focus, and resilience. Cluttered spaces and chaotic schedules add to stress, while supportive surroundings boost your ability to handle obstacles.
Example: If mornings are pure chaos, set up a “launch pad” by the front door with backpacks, shoes, and lunch bags ready the night before. If your work area feels stressful, add a spider plant, a calming photo, or better lighting to shift the energy. Even your digital surroundings count—unfollow accounts that trigger comparison and replace them with uplifting ones.
S – STRENGTHEN Your HABITS
Habits are the daily choices that either build or drain your resilience. Strong habits are important because they create routines that support your well-being and help you stay steady. When challenges come, these habits give you the strength and focus to recover and keep moving forward.
Example: If you have a habit of going for a 10-minute walk every day, you’re more likely to manage stress when a tough email lands in your inbox. Choose one micro-habit to build—like drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning, doing a few minutes of deep breathing, or prepping healthy snacks on Sundays.
H – HONOR Your BOUNDARIES & NEEDS
One of the hardest lessons for many women is learning to protect their time, energy, and emotional space. Boundaries aren’t walls—they’re guidelines that allow you to show up as your best self.
Example: You decline an invitation that will overextend your schedule because you know your family needs a quiet weekend. You stop answering work texts after 8 p.m. because your sleep is a priority. Boundaries aren’t selfish—they’re the ultimate self-care.
By blending Stoic philosophy with The TRISH Method, you get doable steps that help you reset, stay resilient, and handle whatever life throws your way.
