More Than a Buzzword
Spoiler alert: Self-care isn’t a face mask or a glass of rosé. It’s deeper. It’s essential. It’s life-changing. Yet, it’s a phrase we see everywhere—on social media, in bookstores, and on self-help podcasts.
Search “#selfcare” on Instagram, and you’ll scroll through over 75 million posts featuring face masks, green smoothies, and sunset yoga.
But here’s the truth: self-care is not just about the surface. It’s not just a glass of wine, a facemask or a pedicure (although those are lovely too). True self-care is about Self-Preservation. It’s about honoring your needs, setting boundaries, and making space to reconnect with who you are—from the inside out. Self-care is nourishment of the body…physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
At RESET with Trish, we believe in a forward-thinking, holistic approach to self-care that builds resilience and sustains you long-term. It’s not a luxury—it’s a necessity. And it starts with redefining what self-care means to you.
What is Self-Care?
What does self-care LOOK LIKE TO YOU? Is it curling up with a good book on a rainy afternoon? Treating yourself to a pedicure? Going to therapy to talk through your feelings? Meditating in the morning before the world wakes up? Sipping a glass of red wine while unwinding after a long day? There are so many things we call self-care, and they all have their place. These little moments are beautiful forms of self-care—but true self-care goes deeper.
So self-care is really self-preservation. It’s a daily commitment to your well-being—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. It’s recognizing that rest is productive, nourishment is essential, and your energy is worth protecting. It’s setting boundaries without guilt, choosing relationships that uplift you, and giving yourself permission to pause.
True self-care isn’t just about what you do—it’s about how you feel. It’s the act of choosing yourself, over and over again, so you can show up as the best version of yourself in every area of your life. And that starts with a reset. Let’s build a self-care routine that fuels you, restores you, and reminds you just how worthy you are.
The 3 Types of Self-Care (According to Oliver Nino)
Oliver Nino, energy healer and spiritual expert, says there are three different types of self-care. Let’s take a look at each of them and how they can help you stay balanced, healthy, and resilient.
1. Reactive Self-Care
This is the kind of self-care that kicks in when you’re already depleted. You’re running on empty, snapping at your kids, exhausted at work. So you crash on the couch with a Netflix marathon, sneak in a nap, or finally book that long-overdue massage. These are all valid and necessary ways to recover—but they’re more about hitting the brakes than steering the wheel.
By the time you reach this point, your body and mind are practically begging you to pause—sometimes through headaches, irritability, burnout, or even getting sick. You may find relief in sleeping in or taking a mental health day, but here’s the truth: reactive self-care is more of a patch than a plan.
It’s a temporary fix that helps you feel better for a little while, but it doesn’t solve the real problem. It’s like putting a bandage on a deeper issue—it gives quick relief, not long-term strength
2. Preventive Self-Care
Think of this as maintenance. Preventive self-care means you’re doing just enough to keep burnout at bay. You meal prep, you journal here and there, you say no when you can. It’s a step in the right direction.
3. Proactive Self-Care
This is the gold standard because it creates sustainability. Proactive self-care is about having consistent habits that refill your cup before it’s empty. You regularly check in with yourself. You are self-aware and notice your triggers before they spiral. You have rituals in place that support your mind, body, and soul every day. This is where the magic happens.
Why do you need more self-care in your day

Why do you need more self-care in your day?
We can see the importance of being proactive when it comes to self-care. But how can we put this into practice in our life? Treat self-care as a necessity for your body. We know the importance of sleep, but proactive self-care can be just as important.
Self-care can help you avoid burnout. It can actually help you soften to other people as well. If you are feeling irritated with your kids, spouse or people at work, that is a sign that you need to take some time to replenish.
As caregivers we self-sacrifice. We are challenged today more than ever. Most of your day is spent in survival. You are putting out little fires all around you. These little fires of negativity suck energy out of you. Your kids need to see you taking care of yourself and being happy. This will bring them safety and security.
It is important to show up in your life with a full tank of gas and a full battery. You charge your phone every night, but what are you doing to recharge yourself? When you show up feeling and looking your best, you will be more confident and more beautiful inside and out. Nourish yourself to flourish.
Incorporate a Self-Care Routine Into Your Life TODAY
Begin your self-care commitment with a vision and intentions. Ask yourself how you want to feel every day and reflect on how you can get there. What do you need to look and feel your best? Make a list of small things that bring you joy.
Your self-care routine can consist of many things throughout the day. Some women have a beautiful peaceful morning ritual. Other women set aside small pockets of time throughout the day to recharge. Activities like making a warm soothing tea, journaling, going for a short walk, reading for a few minutes, saying affirmations or taking deep cleaning breaths can all be done throughout the day.
There are so many ways to get your needs met. Each one of us is different, so coming up with a personal self-care routine and making it your own will help your self-care practice become a daily habit.
Evaluate Your Self-Care Routine Activities
It is important to practice physical self-care, social self-care, and spiritual self-care by getting your needs met in a healthy way. Watching movies and TV can be a form of self-care because it is a form of escapism. When you are decompressing in front of the tv or your iPhone, ask yourself, “Am I surrounding myself with uplifting and empowering messages? Is this filling my cup and my spirit?
Having a strong social support system can be part of your self-care as well. Your support system may be made up of friends, family, co-workers, or neighbors. Ask yourself, do the people in your inner circle have the capacity to support you? Are they replenishing you or depleting you?
Try incorporating a self-love ritual into your day every hour. Simple activities like a stretch, misting your face, meditating, and saying an affirmation are all things you can do any time and any place. This burst of energy can help you power through the rest of your day.
Diet and exercise are also a part of self-care. Are you preparing healthy foods? Do your meals and snacks that give you fuel and energy? Are you eating with friends and family or are you eating in isolation? Sharing a meal with someone and “breaking bread” is a form of self-care that many people look forward to and enjoy.

The TRISH Method: A Reset Framework for Self-Care
At RESET with Trish, we use the TRISH Method to guide women in building sustainable wellness habits:
- T: Tap into your Vision — Clarify what well-being looks and feels like for YOU.
- R: Reframe Your Mindset — Replace burnout and guilt with permission and compassion.
- I: Improve Your Surroundings — Declutter your space and protect your peace.
- S: Strengthen Your Habits — Build micro-routines that serve you every day.
- H: Honor Your Boundaries and Needs — Say no with love and yes with purpose.
Self-care isn’t one-size-fits-all. It should align with your personal vision, values, and energy.
TRISH-Inspired Self-Care Ideas:
• T: Tap into Your Vision
- Create a vision board with magazine cutouts or digital images that reflect your dream life.
- Set a “vision check-in” once a month to assess if your current choices align with your values.
- Identify your top 3 personal values and keep them visible in your workspace.
- Visualize a successful day from morning to night with detailed mental imagery.
• R: Reframe Your Mindset
- Practice a daily mantra like “Rest is productive” or “I release guilt when I care for myself.”
- Turn your inner critic with an inner coach: write down what you’d say to a friend and say it to yourself.
- Practice gratitude daily, listing three things you appreciate about yourself.
- Replace “I have to” with “I choose to” in your thoughts.
• I: Improve Your Surroundings
- Do a 10-minute tidy-up every morning or evening to keep your space calm
- Add one beautiful thing to your space—flowers, soft light, or a calming scent.
- Use calming colors in your living or work area to reduce stress.
- Play soothing background music or nature sounds while working or relaxing.
- Designate a corner in your home as a mini meditation or reading nook.
• S: Strengthen Your Habits
- Stack a new self-care habit onto an existing one—like meditating after brushing your teeth.
- Use a habit tracker to celebrate small rituals like stretching, drinking water or reading for joy.
- Set a timer for a daily 2-minute reset—close your eyes and breathe deeply or stand and stretch.
- Prepare a healthy snack or drink to enjoy mindfully each day.
- Practice a short evening ritual, like reading or journaling before bed.
• H: Honor Your Boundaries and Needs
- Practice saying “Let me get back to you” to pause before committing.
- Schedule weekly “white space” on your calendar — time just for you.
- Create a “No List”—things you won’t do anymore, like overcommitting or skipping meals.
- Turn off your phone or notifications for set periods each day.
- Reflect weekly on whether your boundaries are being respected and adjust as needed.
How to Build a Sustainable Self-Care Routine
Start small. You don’t need a weekend retreat to feel restored. Consider these everyday self-love practices:
- Stretch for 5 minutes between meetings
- Mist your face with rosewater to refresh and pause
- Whisper an affirmation as you wash your face: “I am radiant. I am worthy. I am enough.”
- Schedule “non-negotiable me time” into your planner
Angela Jia Kim’s Ritual: When Skincare Becomes Soul-Care
Angela Jai Kim, beauty founder and author, shares an interesting concept connecting five minutes of skincare at night to cleaning your soul. She says the skin and soul have a lot in common. They both need purification, detoxification, nourishment, and exfoliation.
Creating a five-minute ritual of washing your face at night can be a wonderful finishing step in your self-care routine. Skincare becomes soul-care when it’s done with intention. Angela Jai Kim encourages pairing a nightly double-cleanse with positive affirmations—a powerful way to wash away both physical impurities and emotional residue from the day. It’s not just about glowing skin—it’s about the energy you carry to bed. By transforming a simple routine into a sacred ritual, you give yourself a moment to reset. “Treat your skin like it is the most expensive silk on Earth.”
Angela’s Steps to Cleansing your Face and Soul Simultaneously
- Wash your face with the double cleansing method
- Begin with an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based cleanser.
- Take your time to slow down and smell the aromas of the products you are using.
- Pair this time with saying an affirmation out loud to purify the skin and soul.
For example, while washing your face you can say, “I am glowing. I am radiant. I am mesmerizing. (No matter what you look like in the moment). This is to attract like frequency. Your soul needs that time of soothing where you speak to yourself with love and kindness. Removing toxins from your skin while saying affirmations is like removing toxic thoughts. Angela compares exfoliating the skin toletting go of the pain of the soul let go. This pain holds you back. End this evening ritual by adding a serum in an upward motion.
In the morning begin the day with the same ritual but end this ritual by adding a beauty oil to keep your skin nourished and dewy then layer a moisturizer on top.
This aligns beautifully with the R in the TRISH Method: Reframe Your Mindset. A skincare routine with affirmations helps replace stress with self-love, guilt with grace, and exhaustion with empowerment
Self-Care Inspires Confidence
Taking time for yourself fuels more than just your energy. It fuels your sense of self-worth. When you honor your needs, you begin to glow from the inside out. Confidence isn’t about appearance—it’s about alignment. It’s about knowing and loving yourself deeply.
Make Self-Care a Daily Habit
Are you interested in change, or are you committed to it? When you make self-care a daily habit, you show yourself that you matter. You teach your future self that she is worth the effort. Consider setting a 90-day commitment to self-love. What would shift in your life if you gave yourself the gift of consistent care?
Explore new experiences: plan a solo adventure, take a cooking class, or go on a self-love sabbatical through an Airbnb experience. Learn how to shine on your own—not just as a mom, a partner, or a professional, but as you.
